In an order dated February 24, 2015, acting Labor Commissioner Mario J. Musolino accepted most of the recommendations of a New York State wage board which will consolidate three categories of tipped workers in the hospitality industry and increase their hourly rate to $7.50 per hour, effective December 31, 2015.
The increase will apply equally to food service workers, service employees
and service employees in resort hotels. Presently, tipped workers in those
industries receive minimum hourly wages ranging from $4.90 to $5.65 per
hour. In addition, Mr. Musolino's order provides that if the state
legislature enacts a separate minimum wage increase for New York City,
then the tipped wage will automatically increase by $1.00 to $8.50 an hour.
At the present time, for most workers the statewide minimum wage is scheduled
to rise from $8.75 an hour to $9.00 an hour at the end of this year.
