Partner Joseph Trotti is the head of the firm’s
Matrimonial and Family Law Practice Group and founding partner of the VMM Family Institute. He's also a leader
of the firm’s
LGBT Representation Practice Group.
He established the VMM Family Institute as a way to foster effective communication
and cooperation in matrimonial and family law matters. Recognizing that
emotional and various other issues cannot be addressed by the legal system,
he has pioneered the use of Collaborative Law principles, an approach
used in corporate dispute resolution, in domestic cases. His practice
empowers families to make informed decisions regarding their future while
avoiding the steep legal fees associated with courtroom battles, and more
importantly—the accompanying emotional harm.
In 2019, Mr. Trotti was
named a New York Law Journal Trailblazer, a prestigious recognition given for
his “pioneer spirit” and work.
In addition to the conventional matters handled by a matrimonial and family
law attorney, Mr. Trotti has extensive experience working with LGBT individuals
and partners on matters unique to members of that community. He was the
executive producer of the documentary,
Left Out in America: Legislating Life, Love and LGBT, a film accepted to the New York International Film Festival in 2011,
for which he was awarded “Best Directorial Debut of a Documentary.”
When litigation becomes necessary – in only the most disputed matrimonial
and family law matters -- Mr. Trotti has an established record of successful
settlements and judgments for his clients. As a litigator, his work also
includes commercial real estate litigation and estate litigation. Litigating
estates calls upon Mr. Trotti’s well-honed communication skills
when a dispute arises over a will, trust or other estate planning element,
including will challenges, trust mismanagement and guardianship contests.
